Labor Day Weekend at the Beach

Mom and Glenn took us to the beach for a final beach weekend of the summer. We kept an eye on the weather all week because Hurricane Earl was on the way to the coast, and the beach we were going to had been evacuated on Thursday morning. The storm came through Thursday night and fortunately was no big deal at all, but the beach was just about deserted by the time we got there on Friday afternoon.

Checking things out with Steve

We had perfect weather all weekend - it was mid 80s, the coolest weather of the summer, beautiful and mild. It was not at all crowded and Ella had a blast in the water and playing in the sand.

Ready to hit the beach

Fun on the beach

Glenn got Ella an inflatable alligator for the pool that she LOVED - she loved getting rides on it, demanding which way she wanted to go, lots of chomping, and being incredibly silly with it

It was a great Labor Day weekend and wonderful way to end the summer!

Big Bed

I have been in no hurry to move Ella out of her crib into a bed. Her sleep has been so good, she enjoys her crib, plus the fact that everything I read says that it is not an easy transition, all made me pretty positive that it would be the last of the big changes we had to tackle this summer (#1 - lose the pacifier, #2 - potty training, and # 3 - move to big girl bed). I knew we were getting close to needing to do it though, and since #1 and #2 are complete, I figured it was about time. We had many busy weekends in a row so I had planned we would make the move the weekend of September 18, our first free weekend...unfortunately I forgot to give Ella the memo and she decided otherwise.

Last Monday I stayed home for the day because Ella was sick. (She had a fever and a sore throat on Sunday, I took her to the doctor on Monday and she said it was a virus. Fortunately she was completely better by Tuesday.) Anyway, as weird timing would have it, we were having 2 rooms upstairs painted, and so I took Ella over to mom's house so that we could avoid the painters and paint smells. I was downstairs at mom's, attempting to work while Ella napped, and she appeared downstairs! She was really proud of herself and said 'I'm climbed out of my crib.' I couldn't believe it. I figured it was just a weird fluke though and put her back to sleep, and she did take a nap after. That night was completely normal and no escape attempts.

The next day she said to me "Mommy, I'm climbed out of my crib to come check on you. You were on the 'puter. I was just hungry, wanted some mac and cheese." So silly! I told her though that it wasn't safe to climb out of her crib and she had to stay in there when she's supposed to be sleeping. That night she decided she was completely done with her crib. She just did not want to be left alone, she would not stay in her crib, and after practically launching herself out of it with a giant thunk, I was just too worried that she could get hurt and I ended up bringing her in bed, and figured we'd come up with a plan the next day. Since we planned on dealing with all of this in several weeks, we had no bed for her or any real back up plan (not to mention our entire upstairs in disarray because of the painting).

We decided she could sleep in the spare room while we decided on the long-term solution, so Steve bought the bed rail and we got Ella very excited for her first night in a big bed. She was thrilled! She talked about it all evening and was so excited. Everything went great until she realized that she was expected to sleep in there by herself. It was a disaster. She wanted to sleep in the hallway at the top of the stairs and said no way to the bed. She would walk around with her blanket on her head. She was 'sirsty.' She was hungry. She had to go potty. At one point she said to me "talk louder to Daddy so I can hear." I asked her if she wanted to go back in her crib, she said yes - and then escaped 30 seconds later. I decided to try her pack and play, thinking it'd be harder to climb out of, and she escaped from that in about .2 seconds. After 2 hours of attempting to keep her in there, I finally ended up sleeping in the spare room bed with her - of course that was the ideal solution for her so she was a happy little camper. And I was a cranky big camper.

As a sidenote, she is absurdly sweet to snuggle with in bed. She'll say things like "you're my best friend" and "I love you more in the world." She wraps her arms so tight around my neck, rests her head on me, wants to be sung to, gives tons of kisses, and has a happy little grin. She is such a snugglebug so it is hard to resist!!!

However, we know this is not for the best, and the next night we were determined that she needed to sleep by herself in bed. A friend gave me some good tips on how to keep her in bed and so I felt prepared (and extra-determined after 2 nights of 2 hr+ bedtime attempts ending in giving in!). Although it took almost an hour of in and out, it actually worked, and she went to sleep on her own in the bed. I was really amazed and kept expecting her to wake up and start calling for me. In the morning she was so proud of herself and we were so proud of her.

We were headed to the beach the next day for the long weekend so I couldn't even imagine what fun was going to wait for us there with the bed situation. It worked out perfectly though, because there was a bunk bed in our room, right next to our bed. It was surprisingly easy, and she slept in there with no problem all weekend. Funnily enough, Steve and I went out to dinner one night and Mom and Glenn put her to bed (in her bed) and when we got back and Steve checked on her, she, along with all of her sleeping stuff, had moved into our bed!

When we got back, she slept again in the spare room for a few nights and it went pretty well. She is waking up earlier than usual and comes in to our room first thing, last night she woke up at 3am. Bedtime has gotten a lot easier because it has only taken 2 or 3 extra tries to get her back in bed each night (way better than the several hours the first few nights!). Tonight is her first night in her room in bed, we still have some more work to do in her bedroom but we're getting there. I had visions of her moving into a perfectly prepared room but instead this is the piecemeal approach. Needless to say, this is not at all how I envisioned this step, but it's a good lesson for me that it's okay when things don't go exactly as I have planned, and that improvising and bumps in the road are all just a part of being a parent.

Ella-isms

Some of my favorite Ella-isms from the past few weeks -

I asked her what she was doing. "I'm going shopping. By myself! Sound good guys?"

Nomar was playing and kind of running around. Ella says - "Oh Omar, Omar's being silly. I go check him. See what's doing." Ella goes into the laundry room and I hear "Hi Omar, what doing? I close the door, go downstairs." Very proudly - "Mommy! I made Omar go downstairs."

I was making her lunch one night. "You're making pasta for my lunch. What else?"

Eating breakfast one morning, "I need to get down and go pet Cory REALLY NICE (with hand gestures to show just how nice she was going to be). Then, with a finger point, "I not hit Cory EVER (very big eyes) - I am REALLY NICE to Cory." And then she yells to Cory, "Hi Cory. I be nice!"

"I need to stand up and put my shoes on, Mommy says."

Me: How do you feel this morning? Ella: Happy!

Ella was working on stamping a piece of paper with her stamps. I asked if I could see her project and she said "no, you cannot." I said "why won't you show me?". Her reply - "this is MY chore, not your chore."

"Daddy used my stool to hang a picture. I shared!!!"

"Thank you Steve!" (this one really shocked us and seemed to surprise her too!)

"I love my toys. In my house. All my toys!"

Erin: Ella, your hair is getting so long! Ella: And very beautiful.

With Glenn, walking up the stairs. Glenn: "Ella, do you want to come to New Jersey with me?" Ella: "I can't. It's too late!"

"I used my manners!"

On her toy phone. "I call Grammy. Grammy, Hello? Hello?" Annoyed - "Her's not talking!"

We were in a parking lot waiting for Steve. Ella: "I see Daddy!" Me: "That's not Daddy, that's a lady!" Ella: "Ohhh, a neighbor!" (it was not a neighbor)

"I get older, to 3 and a half, and I eat peanuts and drink coffee!"

Playing with her birthday cake toy. "Mommy, wait - don't sing Happy Birthday! I add a candle!"

"Mommy, what happened at work today?"

Completely unsolicited, "I had a good night of sleep."

"Sometimes, the playground gets broke. Can't play on the playground. Daddy fix it tomorrow?

"Daddy, talk with your voices!"

"I see an old lady!" (Said within very easily heard earshot of the not-so-old lady.)

"I drink milk and it makes me really big. And strong. And FAST!"

"I give big kisses to Mommy all day long."

Visit from Grampy G

Glenn came to visit a few weeks ago, we all had dinner together, and Ella got to spend an afternoon with him. It was quite a success - he put the frog and fish pools up for her in the backyard and she played in the water for hours.

It was great to see him and Ella had lots of fun with her Grampy G!

Marshmellow

The other day Ella took the tiny eyeglasses from her Potato Heads and put them on. I tried to catch a video of her wearing the glasses because she just looked so adorable. It got even more adorable when she went to pretend to put on a mustache, which she called a "marshmellow" - too funny!

Girls Weekend

I took Ella to Charlotte to see Erin the weekend before last. We had an all-girls weekend and it was so much fun!

We drove there on Friday night, and Ella was so excited to see Erin, she probably asked me no less than 800 times on the way there when we were going to see her. It was also her first 3-hour car ride since being potty trained, so we had to make 2 stops on the way there. Add in about 100 rounds of ABCs and Itsy Bitsy Spider, and I was quite happy when we arrived!

On Saturday we painted pottery for the first time with Ella. She painted a little kitty and I although I wasn't sure what to expect, I was pretty impressed with how much she painted and how well she behaved. (She also was greatly entertained by a big basket of stamps!)

Erin did an expert job of painting a Nola-look alike and we managed to keep Ella from making any contributions to it (although she would've liked to!)

We went out to dinner and rented the Frog Princess to watch. We all liked the movie and Erin showed me how to make french braids which I've been trying to learn but it is not easy!

On Sunday morning we had brunch at the restaurant where we're holding Erin's shower in a few months and it was fantastic. Ella couldn't get enough french toast and we kept telling her what a big girl she was being at our special girls' breakfast.

Checking out a little fountain outside

It was such a great weekend - relaxing and fun and so great to have some girl time with just the 3 of us. It's so neat to see how much Ella loves Aunt Erin and I am so excited for the birth of my nephew in just a few more months!!

Visit from Grampy and Grandma Carole

Steve's Dad and Carole came to visit us for several days a few weeks ago, it was great to have them here. Ella spent many hours in her playroom with Carole, they did some painting and stamping, and lots of playing.

She loved pretending she was a monster and chasing Grampy all around with her blankie on her head. She would also laugh and yell "that's not right!" when Grampy would say the alphabet letters in the wrong order.

They all went swimming one day and to a museum downtown one day when I was at work, and I got great reports on all the fun they had. It was so good to have them visit and hopefully we'll see them again soon!

Weekend at Grammy's

While Steve and I were at the beach, Ella stayed at Mom's house and had quite the weekend! Grammy built her a fort and she spent lots of time in there, played with all of her toys there, and of course went swimming in the kiddie pools both afternoons.

A few pics that Mom sent me during the weekend

Enjoying a delicious dessert

Yummy breakfast

Mom also painted Ella's fingernails and toenails for the first time. Ella was very proud of her manicure and pedicure!

It is so great to know that we are able to get away for a few days and that Ella is so well-taken care of by Mom and she gets her own little vacation too!

Our 8th Anniversary

Steve and I had our 8th anniversary on August 10th. We went to the beach for the weekend, just the two of us. It was soooo much fun. We had 2 nights away and it was just the best.

We got there on Friday night and went out to dinner and some bars on the boardwalk. Our hotel was right on the beach and we spent Saturday on the beach and at the pool - there was a bar and restaurant by the pool and we had drinks, read, and spent the whole day relaxing. That night we went out to dinner and then to a dueling piano bar. We even had a little bit of time on Sunday to read by the pool.

It was just a perfect weekend and a great way to celebrate our 8th anniversary!

(really weird picture but we had to attempt to get one of the two of us!)
